You’ve Never Had News Like This

Lauren Hedley

Head of Sport

Hey Cam FM Family!

I hope everyone is okay and settling back into the swing of things at uni. Let me introduce myself for those of you who have not met me yet. I am Lauren and I am the Head of Sport at Cam FM. There is currently much to be excited about in the world of sport at Cam FM, especially throughout this term.

For starters, we have revived our relationship with Cambridge United! This means that we will officially have our own highlights from the home games. And with this comes the exciting decision of what to do with this. And this can be decided by you. Fill in the form here to have your say on what type of show we introduce to Cam FM. And in other exciting news, Lent Bumps is fast approaching! Bumps is one of the BEST activities to get involved in at Cam FM and I highly recommend you consider commentating this time. It is not until the last week of February so keep your eyes peeled for an update regarding sign ups!

Thanks for letting me ramble at you and I hope to see some of you getting involved in sport at Cam FM. Grab me at lh786@cam.ac.uk if you want to chat!

Updates

Cam FM Film Night THIS THURSDAY

This is probably not the most important update in the newsletter, but I write the newsletter, so I’m putting it up top!

This Thursday (25th January) is Cam FM’s Film Night, and I’m very excited to announce that the film will be The Boat That Rocked!

A band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that wanted classical music, and nothing else, on the airwaves.

Film night will be in the TV room in S staircase at Downing College. Bring your own drinks and snacks! Arrive from 7pm, and the film will start at 8pm. I’m going to send a dedicated email tomorrow evening with directions and other necessary information.

I genuinely cannot wait, and look forward to seeing lots of you on Thursday!

Collaborative Shows!

Cam FM's collaborative shows are back! They're a great way to get involved - especially if you don't think you can commit to doing a show every week during exam season. It would be great to have at least 2 presenters for each week, so put your name down for a slot and then reach out to whoever's down as your co-hosts:

Sunday Breakfast on Cam FM – Sundays 9-10am

You can play lots of music, have some chill conversation, do some trivia questions, play games - anything you want, really! Open to everyone!

Cam FM’s Time to Talk - Saturdays 7pm

Shows focused on mental health and wellbeing. Raise awareness of a certain topic, interview an expert, an hour of stress relief with boosting songs and silliness, mental health quiz

Her Voice – TBC

Shows focused on the voices of women and non-binary people. Please contact our excellent Deputy Station Manager Emma if you’d like to get involved with Her Voice!

Broadcast Control Tweaks

Jacob has been busy making some tweaks Cam FM’s frontend (and backend; more on that later).

The left-hand side of Broadcast Control now displays the source of the shows before and after you. This should make it easier for you to transition between shows. It would be great to get into the habit of thanking the previous presenter at the start of your show, and plugging the show that is following yours at the end.

If you have any problems or any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the tech team and/or the committee using the links below!

Missed Show Emails

…and now for the backend tweaks!

There is now an automatic nudge email to presenters who miss their shows.

We’d like to remind you that if you cannot make your show for whatever reason, don’t panic! Just let us know by emailing the committee, preferably with 48 hours’ notice. As per the constitution (7.1.3.10 for those wondering), if a presenter misses a show twice in one term without prior warning and without good cause, that presenter may forfeit their schedule slots for the remainder of the scheduling period.

Remember, if you have any problems, we’re here to help! Just drop the committee a line using committee@camfm.co.uk, or clicking the button below.

If you would like to schedule some time in the studio but do not know when it is free, you can find this out on the members’ site!

Log in to the members page, and under Useful Links and Contacts, you’ll find “Check Studio Availability”. Here you can see the entire schedule and find empty slots!

I’ve also linked it below for ya!

Interesting tidbits

Declan McKenna released a new song on an EP this week, “Mulholland’s Dinner and Wine”.

I’m kinda feeling it, let me know if you are too:

Top of my on repeat this week is Oliver Heldens, Nile Rogers and House Gospel Choir with “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”. It is of course a cover (kinda?) of KISS’s track of the same name. AND IT SLAPS.

After last week’s AI bike, this story is like an AI cherry on top.

DPD, in their infinite wisdom, has deployed an AI customer service chatbot as a sort of first line of defence before you can message a real person. And of course, as the internet does, the internet broke it.

Ashley Beauchamp, a customer, managed to elicit swear words and a critical poem about DPD from it. Frustrated by the bot's inability to provide information on his missing parcel, Beauchamp experimented to see what the chatbot could do, producing inappropriate responses. The conversation, which included the bot swearing and calling itself useless, unsurprisingly went viral.

DPD attributed the issue to an error following a system update and has since disabled the AI. DPD has not resolved Beauchamp's issue with the missing parcel.

Apple started taking pre-orders for its VR/AR headset, Apple Vision Pro, on Friday in the US. (You may recall that I wrote about it in Newsletter 2: Electric Boogaloo. Come on, surely you’re keeping up with the Newsletter Lore) It’s selling for $3500 (!) and the first impressions from reviewers have started to come out. Let’s just say they weren’t gushing over it.

The main complaints are that its heavy, and that while it’s technologically impressive, Apple have struggled to demonstrate a use case that justifies you or me paying thousands for it. Apple are leaning heavily on developers, who once they get their hands on it in Feburary, will (in theory) develop apps that will help answer that question.

Answer to last edition's brain teaser: A balloon

This week, your teaser is:

I'm a word of letters three, add two, and fewer there will be. What am I?

Stop. Hammer Time.

Hey hey wait wait wait! Don’t go yet!

Just another reminder about the film night on Thursday from 7pm at Downing. Tee-hee. See you then
